No passado ano de 2022 celebraram-se os 650 anos de aliança luso-britânica. A diplomacia foi evoluindo ao longo do tempo, transformando-se em uma atividade de especialistas dotados de competências para dirimir eventuais conflitos e salvaguardar a união entre Estados amigos. Durante a Idade Média e o Renascimento, os casamentos reais e as alianças matrimoniais eram comuns para reforçar as relações entre os Estados. Na época moderna, ocorreu o estabelecimento de relações diplomáticas permanentes entre Estados soberanos, contribuindo para formalizar as relações internacionais. Na era contemporânea desenvolveu-se a diplomacia de contenção, a diplomacia da conferência e a diplomacia “secreta”, envolvendo conversações e negociações não oficiais. O intuito deste trabalho é o de conhecer o conjunto de acordos e medidas de aproximação luso-britânica ao longo dos séculos, mas também o desenvolvimento das relações interestatais.
Metodologicamente procedeu-se a uma pesquisa de bibliografia de referência no Google Scholar, na Biblioteca Pública de Matosinhos, na B-on da UFP e em sites de referência. O método de pesquisa é essencialmente descritivo por se ajustar à matéria em estudo.
The year 2022 was celebrated as the 650th anniversary of the Luso-British alliance. Diplomacy has evolved over time, becoming an activity of specialists with the skills to resolve any conflicts and safeguard the union between friendly states. During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, royal marriages and marriage alliances were common to strengthen relations between states. In modern times, permanent diplomatic relations were established between sovereign states, helping to formalise international relations. The contemporary era saw the development of containment diplomacy, conference diplomacy and ‘secret’ diplomacy, involving unofficial talks and negotiations. The aim of this work is to find out about the set of agreements and measures to bring the Portuguese and British closer together over the centuries, as well as the development of inter-state relations. Methodologically, a reference bibliography was searched on google scholar, the Matosinhos Public Library, the UFP's B-on and reference websites. The research method is essentially descriptive as it fits the subject under study.
