Abstract(s)
This study analyzes the behavior of athletes regarding the consumption of food supplements, as well as the reasons for its consumption and the information held by the athletes on these substances. The answers were treated to a survey submitted to fifty four athletes, soccer and basketball players, professional and amateurs. The results revealed that 77.8% of the surveyed regularly consume dietary supplements, showing its use to be more frequent in soccer players. The protein was the most commonly used supplement (38.7% of the responses). In addition, an improvement of sport performances was reported in 29.1% of the surveyed, which was the most frequent. The privileged sources of information were nutritionists (34.2%) and doctors (19.0%); it should be noted that the information provided by friends, family and others was also mentioned by nearly a quarter of the athletes. It is concluded that the use of these substances is a common practice, a sharply informed manner, although there are indicators that point the need to scientifically qualify the information held by the athletes.
