Abstract(s)
In today’s world, the desire for interaction and breaking down social barriers has been revolutionizing the means of communication, and journalism is no exception. The rapid growth of the internet and social media is one of the main epicenters of this revolution. This “world2 where everyone can interact with any part of the globe and receive information quickly is a result of significant journalistic reforms that leave the public wanting more. Audiences are no longer just mere spectators, but rather aspire to participate. Now they can interact with news through likes, shares and comments, often contributing additional information. They can also easily get in touch with journalists and expect some sort of influence over the news agenda. However, this new element gives rise to disagreements and issues between both parties, from questioning the impartiality of the press to the dissemination of false information. In this project, two different cases will be analyzed, both mainly unfolding on social media. We will examine the behavior within these platforms and the responses and actions of journalist regarding them. This collaboration will be explored, and all its benefits and mistakes will be pointed out. Fill we will study the case of Luka Magnotta and his intense online manhunt. Second, we will look over the sexual crimes committed by Harvey Weinstein, particularly the moment when social media starts being used to expose the magnate. This will provide a good insight into these new tools and how they are used by the media for the sourcing, processing and spreading of information.
