A saúde oral é um fator que contribui para o bem-estar geral dos indivíduos e que influencia a
qualidade de vida. Esta revisão narrativa da literatura tem como objetivo sistematizar o estudo
do impacto do tratamento ortodôntico, bem como, das diferentes técnicas mecânicas para o
tratamento ortodôntico, nos diversos parâmetros de qualidade de vida: saúde física, saúde
mental, saúde social e saúde funcional dos indivíduos. Numa fase inicial do tratamento
ortodôntico verifica-se um impacto negativo na dimensão física, funcional, psicológica e social
e, ao longo do tempo, uma melhoria no impacto psicossocial e da estética. Após conclusão, ou
numa fase final do tratamento ortodôntico, ocorre uma melhoria da saúde oral relacionada com
a qualidade de vida. No entanto, serão necessários mais estudos, com maiores amostras e um
instrumento universal de avaliação de qualidade de vida, para saber o real impacto do
tratamento ortodôntico na qualidade de vida dos indivíduos.

This literature review aims to systematize the study of the orthodontic treatment’s impact, as well as the different mechanical techniques for performing orthodontic treatment, on quality of life parameters: physical health, mental health, social health and functional health of individuals. In an early orthodontic treatment phase, there is a negative impact on the physical, functional, psychological and social dimension and, over time, an improvement in the psychosocial impact and aesthetics. After completion or in a final stage of orthodontic treatment, there is an improvement in oral health related quality of life. However, further studies, with large samples and an universal evaluation instrument for quality of life, will be needed to find the real impact that orthodontic treatment has on individuals quality of life.
