Abstract(s)
Sleep is indispensable to human existence, invoking a number of capital functions in different age groups. There are several determinants that contribute to its change, being shift work one of these. Studies over time have shown that a good sleep hygiene is essential for an efficient work performance and a good health as well, so that one won’t suffer negative repercussions as a result of an inadequate or poor sleep management. In nurses, this is a pressing issue, because these professionals, in addition to the great stress load to which they are subjected, are used to work shifts, night or day shifts, seeing their typology and sleep pattern changed. Eleven national and international studies that studied the quality of sleep in nurses and the consequences of their deprivation when subjected to shift work were considered for analysis. It was concluded that most of them were aware that the poor quality of sleep, its absence or hourly deregulation caused problems both in terms of health, professional performance and familiar, social and recreational life.
