| dc.description.abstract | Entre o número elevado de vírus herpes conhecidos, oito são capazes de infetar os humanos e, excetuando HHV-8, todos têm prevalências significativas, embora não uniformes. Todos os vírus herpes possuem capacidade de latência, uma propriedade biológica única que aumenta a probabilidade de transmissão e torna a cura uma meta atualmente inatingível. As infeções pelos vírus herpes humanos podem ser assintomáticas ou clinicamente atípicas, tornando assim difícil aplicar o tratamento adequado no momento correto. Podem causar doenças relativamente suaves, com prognóstico favorável, em pacientes imunocompetentes, ou doenças severas, mesmo fatais, em pacientes cujo sistema imunitário esteja menos eficaz, temporária ou permanentemente. Este trabalho descreve as principais infeções e doenças herpéticas causadas pelos oito vírus herpes humanos, as medidas preventivas e os fármacos recomendados para o tratamento. Among the large amount of known herpes virus, eight are able to infect humans and, excepting HHV-8, all have large, though not uniform, prevalence. All herpes virus share the ability to latency, an unique biological ability that improves the likelihood of transmission and makes the cure an unattainable target, so far. Infections by human herpes virus may be asymptomatic or clinically uncharacteristic, thus making difficult the right treatment at the right time. They may cause relatively mild illnesses, with favorable prognostic in immunocompetent patients or severe, even fatal, diseases in patients whose immune system is less effective, temporarily or permanently.
