Abstract(s)
Introduction: Mental and behavioural disorders are increasingly common, representing about 12% of the world's burden of disease. Due to their mental condition, psychiatric patients tend to neglect their personal hygiene, including oral hygiene, making them more susceptible to developing oral pathologies. When these people are hospitalised, healthcare professionals should assume a vigilant role and promote this practice, however, this does not always happen. Objetives: To evaluate the knowledge of oral hygiene among nurses who provide direct care to institutionalised patients in the Magalhães Lemos psychiatric Hospital, as well as to understand and describe the care provided to these patients. Materials and Methods: This is a quantitative exploratory-descriptive cross-sectional study, with a sample composed of nurses providing care to institutionalised patients at the Magalhães Lemos Psychiatric Hospital. A questionnaire was used as a data collection tool, and the SPSS® software was used for data processing and analysis. Results: The sample was composed of 21 nurses, aged between 27 and 63 years, with a mean and standard deviation of 43.3 ± 11.2 years, 52.4% female. Around 90% of the individuals consider oral hygiene to be their competence, but 20% consider their learning in this area insufficient. Regarding the observation of the oral cavity, 76% stated that they only do it when the patient's autonomy is compromised, being the colour of the gums (81%) and halitosis (76.2%) the most valued aspects, and the amount of saliva (81%) and number of teeth (71.4%) the least valued. Conclusions: During the study, the limited research on the topic was evident. Most nurses consider the oral hygiene of these patients to be their competence, however, fewer nurses consider that their training in this area is enough for them to adequately perform it. It is crucial to assess the feasibility of implementing protocols in order to standardise the guidelines and oral health care provided by nurses in psychiatric institutions and it is imperative to invest in their training in order to prepare them to provide the best care to patients.
