Abstract(s)
Inflammatory bowel disease includes a set of infammatory diseases whose incidence is inceasing. The main characteristic in this disease are the intestinal symptoms, however, it can be associated with with extraintestinal manifestations, including oral lesions. Although these oral lesions, in most cases, appear after the diagnosis, these may be the first sign of disease. This literature review aims to clarify the changes in oral cavity caused by inflammatory bowel disease, to help the medical dentist to contribute positively in the early diagnostic and the treatment. This literature search was performed in PubMed, SciELO and Google academic. As main conclusion, it was found that the early diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease is the key to successful treatment of the disease and oral lesions, and dentists have two important roles: before there is a diagnosis of Crohn's disease and when it’s already diagnosed.
