Abstract(s)
Masseteric hypertrophy is an uncommon clinical phenomenon characterized by an exaggerated development near the angle of the mandible. This work consists of a bibliographic review based on 50 articles whose objective is to describe and discuss the properties of botulinum toxin and to understand how these properties provide its use in masseteric hypertrophy. The use of botulinum toxin in masseteric hypertrophy allows to reduce the volume of the masseter muscle. The injection of toxin into the muscle inhibits the release of acetylcholine blocking the neuromuscular junction and consequently a temporary paralysis of the muscle. There are several techniques described in the literature and, when applied with strict criteria of injection, dosage, also considering the anatomical limitations, botulinum toxin benefits the treatment of masseteric hypertrophy. As this toxin is a highly relevant topic in Dentistry, it should continue to be researched in relation to dosage and application points for the treatment of Masseteric Hypertrophy.
