La poesía puertorriqueña del siglo XX ha sido marcada por el cambio de soberanía en el 98, que estimuló el desarrollo de temas identitarios así como la tardía aclimatación de estilos poéticos llegados de tierras lejanas, adaptados a su realidad histórica inmediata. Paralelamente, surge una nueva poesía sensual, de ritmo afroantillano, basada en la celebración de la isla y de sus paisajes, del mar y de las esencias tropicales. A partir de 1962, el grupo Guajana con su compromiso político y fervor lírico, hizo nacer obras profundamente humanas, inspiradas en los grandes temas universales adaptadas a la realidad de la isla: el amor, el combate, la nostalgia, la soledad, el sueño... Desde los años 70, las nuevas generaciones de poetas continúan tratando esos temas, con un nuevo sello, una nueva vitalidad y nuevas voces. Las mujeres poetas toman la iniciativa y los poetas siguen tendencias que muestran no solamente una gran cultura, sino también un gran amor a su país y a la cultura en general. Puerto Rican poetry of the XX century has been marked by a change of sovereignty in 1898 that stimulated the development of identitario topics as well as the late acclimatization of poetic styles arrived from distant lands, and adapted to their immediate historical reality. Simultaneously, a sensual new poetry arises, of Afro-Antillean rhythms, based on the celebration of the island and its landscapes, the sea and its tropical essences. After 1962, the group Guajana with its political commitment and lyrical fervor gave birth to deeply human works, inspired on large universal themes, adapted to the reality of the island: love, struggle, nostalgia, solitude, dreas...From the 7s on, the new generations of poet’s continues treating those topics, with a new stamp, a new vitality and new voices. Women poets take the initiative and male poets follow tendencies that show not only a great culture, but also a great love for their country and culture in general.
