Abstract(s)
Inaccessible to most Portuguese, Palliative Care continues to be seen with prejudice. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first consists in a systematic literature review, which aims to describe the knowledge and beliefs related to Palliative Care of health care professionals, health care students and the rest of the population. In short, the results suggest that there are gaps in the general population knowledge regarding Palliative Care that will influence attitudes and beliefs, these results are consistent in the latest years and in different populations. The second part presents an article related to an empirical study, which aims to describe the knowledge and beliefs in a sample of 290 residents in Portugal, all fluent in Portuguese. In this study, a sociodemographic questionnaire and a questionnaire on knowledge and beliefs related to Palliative Care were conducted, the results show that the Portuguese population in general, health students and health professionals have a good knowledge about this health care. However, in general, health professionals have more knowledge and a decrease in beliefs about Palliative Care, compared to health students and the Portuguese population in general that fail to grasp this concept. It was concluded that it is important that there is an investment in the training of future Healthcare professionals and an appropriate intervention of public awareness.
