Abstract(s)
This qualitative study investigated the relationship between conflict and emotional dysregulation through the perceptions of 11 adults residing in Portugal. The research also examined opportunities for the re-signification of emotions, considering the context of participants’ birth and upbringing. The study aimed to understand the challenges in the effectiveness of emotional responses resulting from the interaction between organism, individual, and environment. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted using a script of 11 guiding questions, applied remotely via the Zoom platform, which made it possible to carry out the study since participants lived in different regions across mainland Portugal. Participants reported diverse experiences related to conflict management and the way they perceived their emotions, both at the moment of conflict and when invited to reflect on the possibility of having already practiced the skills described by Linehan. The study also explored how skills training, as studied by Linehan (2018), may contribute to more adaptive emotional responses when facing challenging situations. The data obtained deepen the understanding of emotion regulation, highlighting the importance of including this topic in contexts of dysfunctional families or during marital separation. Skills training, particularly for individuals in at-risk situations, may represent a valuable tool for society. Despite the inherent limitations, the study demonstrates that individuals show a high capacity for adaptation even in the face of occasional episodes of dysregulation, becoming increasingly competent in their emotional skills.
