Abstract(s)
The current industrial application of cadmium and lead affect human health through its occupational and environmental exposure. Their interference in normal cell activity using a variety of intrinsic mechanisms to each metal and their weak removal and subsequent bioaccumulation are responsible for toxics effects in various organs including kidney, liver, lungs and nervous system. Cadmium is associated with the development of osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases, kidney stones, miscarriages and premature births, infertility and seems to be related to the onset of Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's. Lead is related with the development of anemia, disturbance in the heme’s biosynthesis, osteoporosis, high cholesterol levels, saturnine colic, psychiatric problems and neurodegenerative diseases, the appearance of atherosclerosis and associated cardiovascular diseases. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified these metals as potential human carcinogens. The detoxification using the chelating and antioxidant supplementation are part of the current protocol with proven therapeutic benefits. Currently, the monitoring of exposure and identification of contamination sources by adopting preventive strategies are measures taken to reduce the risk that these entail.
