In recent years, the rise of radical right-wing and far-right political forces has been a major topic of analysis in political science. In this regard, scientific research is essential to understanding the factors behind this global phenomenon. In Portugal, for decades, there was voter resistance to radical and populist political forces, strongly influenced by the negative memory of the authoritarian Estado Novo regime (1933–1974). However, in 2019, Chega was founded, a radical right-wing party that broke with Portugal’s exceptionalism within the European context, having, in just six years, won 60 seats in the Assembly of the Republic, establishing itself as the second-largest political force in the country. In order to understand this phenomenon, this paper establishes a theoretical framework that analyzes the concept of the radical right and its distinction from the far right, as well as the rise of these political forces in the contemporary world. Subsequently, a brief overview is presented of the portuguese party system following April 25, 1974, André Ventura’s academic and professional background, the motivations behind the founding of the Chega party, as well as its internal founding factions, accompanied by an explanatory analysis of its exponential growth. Finally, the strategies used by the party to attract voters and supporters are examined, along with an analysis of the electoral results obtained by Chega and a definition of the profile of its electorate.
