- Looking at crime – ética e deontologia em contexto de investigação com pessoasPublication . Azevedo, Vanessa; Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.Atendendo a que os «criminólogos tendem a basear-se principalmente, direta ou indiretamente, em investigação empírica com seres humanos» (Johnstone, 2005, p.60), no âmbito do projeto “Looking at crime: Communities and physical spaces” tornou-se imperativo discutir e balizar um conjunto de princípios éticos e deontológicos. Neste trabalho propomos: i) proceder à contextualização sintética do projeto, ii) identificar as suas especificidades, e iii) sistematizar os princípios éticos e deontológicos considerados, exemplificando a sua implementação. O projeto “Looking at crime: Communities and physical spaces” propõe-se a realizar um retrato abrangente do crime no Centro Histórico do Porto, através da caracterização dos crimes reportados oficialmente, da implementação de um inquérito de vitimação e da observação dos espaços físicos, tendo como população-alvo indivíduos adultos da comunidade. No que concerne às especificidades - com evidentes implicações ético-deontológicas, destacam-se o envolvimento de uma equipa multidisciplinar, a multiplicidade e diversidade das fontes dos dados, a delimitação geográfica e a abordagem de um grupo potencialmente vulnerável, nomeadamente vítimas de crime (Peter & Friedland, 2017). Assim, para além da obtenção das autorizações por parte das várias instituições envolvidas (e.g., Junta de Freguesia, Ministério da Educação), tornou-se imperativo salvaguardar princípios éticos e deontológicos, tais como o consentimento informado, a participação voluntária, a confidencialidade e o anonimato, a relação entre riscos e benefícios (com primazia do critério de risco mínimo), a segurança, a intrusão e a responsabilidade social (Caridade, 2017; Israel & Hay, 2014; Johnstone, 2005; Rhineberger, 2006). Estes princípios concretizam-se em várias estratégias, que perpassam as diferentes fases da investigação.

Nunes, L.; Sani, Ana; Azevedo, VanessaWhen a crime occurs, even if not reported, it raises a great concern on a social level, whether because of the complexity of the phenomenon, the persistence over time, the consequences of it, or even because of the space where the crime has taken place. Official records do not take into consideration a certain amount of criminal events, mostly because of non-reported crimes, nor spaces characteristics, which results in a lack of understanding of the global phenomenon and its complexities. This project, involving a multidisciplinary team and focused on Historic Center of Porto, aims to: i) characterize criminal behaviour base on the type of crime, geographic location, and perpetrators; ii) get access to non-reported crimes; iii) identify the signs of crime, or risk of crime, in a school environment; and iv) map out the physical spaces that associate with criminal behaviour. A multisystemic approach will be applied including different contexts and different individuals – i.e., communities and their members, school staff, students and the physical places where the interaction happens. In order to look at crime in a holistic view, data from several sources – official statistical data, self-report surveys, and physical spaces observation - will be collected. In addition, we also aim to combine and integrate these data into a single database. Therefore, the project will provide a comprehensive and deep portrait of crime in Historic Center of Porto, suggesting new criminal preventive strategies that could be put into place. Detailed information about the scope, aims, methods, expected outcomes and research team will be presented in this poster.
- Perceptions of education professionals: contribution to characteristics, dynamics and behaviors in school environmentPublication . Caridade, Sónia; Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.; Gonçalves, Maria João; Dinis, Maria Alzira PimentaSchool acts as an important mirror of society, reflecting all the social transformations that are taking place. It is also a space where it is possible to use strategies in order to manage and minimize the constant difficulties of everyday life. At the same time, school environment is where the children occupy most of their time, either through participation in the distinct educational activities or in accomplishing other leisure activities. It is also the environment in which the cognitive, psychological and social capacities of young students are encouraged and improved in a structured and pedagogical way. Daily school life is characterized by a plurality of practices and dynamics that, frequently, disrupt the good school functioning, and may also have an important impact on the developmental pathways of children. Behaviours encompassing violence and indiscipline are easily identified as recurring practices in the daily life of different schools, leading to the breakdown of social bonding through the use of force and aggression. The results of a study conducted with educational agents, i.e., teachers and non-teachers, aiming to analyse the perception of these educational professionals about the characteristics, dynamics and behaviours inherent to the internal functioning of the school environment, will be presented, concluding with the main practical and preventive implications of this research.
- School surrounding spaces and school operation: a perspective from the teaching staffPublication . Caridade, Sónia; Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.; Gonçalves, Maria João; Guerreiro, Maria JoãoSchool is an importat agent of socialization and has drawn great attention to the scientific community to identify and characterize the main dimensions that may interfere with its operation and resulting academic performance of students. Collection of information about the school environment and surrounding spaces is an underlying dimension in school environment diagnostic reports development given its documented importance on crime prevention. It is important to understand not only school spaces distribution, but also surrounding spaces characteristics, namely, presence of stores/industry/services that may disturb its operation. School location, size, arquitecture, entrances and exits are important elements to be considered in deviant behaviour prevention. In an oral presentation, we seek to show some results from a research project being developed by education agents (teachers and staff), to analyse these professionals’ perspective on how the surrounding characteristics of spaces may influence school internal operation. This study intends to delineate, develop and implement action plans that may improve shcool operation and prevent problematic and/or antissocial behaviours in this context. Practical and preventive implications will be debated at the end.
