- Graft-versus-host disease post-hematopoietic cell transplant and oral manifestations: narrative reviewPublication . Valente, Antonino; Oliveira, Filipa Pinto deThe hematopoietic stem cell transplant is a surgical technique available for the care and treatment of malignant hematological neoplasms, such as leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other malignancies. This technique is constantly evolving and is also frequently used for solid tumors. However, it can lead to complications such as graft-versus-host disease due to an immunological reaction between the transplanted cells. In some cases, this pathology can manifest in the oral cavity through multiple immune-mediated or autoimmune conditions, making the oral cavity one of the most frequent sites for signs and symptoms of graft rejection. In this work, we aim to describe the types of graft-versus-host disease, the histopathogenesis of this pathology, and, above all, to classify the clinical manifestations and oral lesions associated with graft-versus-host disease. It also aims to address the types of diagnoses and treatments to intervene in the oral health of these patients, improve quality of life, and reduce risk factors, which is a fundamental role of oral health professionals in preventing the onset of these disorders.
