- The role of dentists in advising HPV vaccination for adults: a systematic review and meta-analysisPublication . Teixeira , Ana Rita Fernandes; Lopes, Otília; Bulhosa, José FriasHuman Papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a sexually transmitted disease that affects both genders, with an increasing number of infections being observed. To counter this rise, preventive measures, such as vaccination, are proposed. The current HPV vaccination rate remains below expectations. Considering the role dentists should play in primary prevention and advising on HPV infection, this systematic review aims to evaluate their role in counseling about HPV vaccination. The research question was developed using the PICO strategy: the Population corresponds to dentists, the Intervention consists of HPV vaccination counseling by dentists to adults, the Comparison refers to the absence of such counseling, and the Outcome is the adoption of a positive attitude by adults toward vaccination. It is expected that active involvement of dentists in counseling on HPV vaccination will lead to a positive attitude among adults towards primary prevention, potentially influencing vaccination uptake favorably. The aim of this review is to develop a clinical recommendation that demonstrates the essential role of dentists in counseling adults on HPV vaccination. The research was conducted in several databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, SciELO, Google Scholar, and the institutional repository of the University Fernando Pessoa, with no time restrictions and including publications in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. The search strategy included MeSH terms combined using Boolean connectors. To ensure transparency and reproducibility, the search protocol was registered on the PROSPERO platform. Two researchers will independently conduct the study selection using the Rayyan platform; a third researcher will intervene in case of disagreements. The screening process will follow PRISMA guidelines, and study quality will be assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. The lead researcher will be responsible for extracting relevant data, including primary data and main results, based on a pre-established analytical table. Data analysis will be conducted both qualitatively and quantitatively, allowing a comprehensive understanding of the existing evidence. Furthermore, the implications of the results for clinical practice and the importance of the dentist's role in promoting HPV vaccination will be discussed.
