- Disabled patients in dentistry: an ethical perspectivePublication . Taher, Navid; Teixeira, SusanaThe aim of this work is to show special needs in dental care of disabled persons. Disabled persons are vulnerable and have a disposition to be treated harmfully. In order to protect vulnerable persons, different layers of vulnerability, and stimulus conditions must be identified, eradicated and minimized. The dentist must explain upcoming procedures and make sure that the disabled person is able to understand. For any treatment in dentistry and the participation in clinical trials, patients must give informed consent. The capacity to give informed consent must be determined. If the person is not capable to give consent, consent must be given by proxy. There is a gap of knowledge identified in not having ample research in the area of preventive dental interventions in adults with intellectual disabilities. There is need of more research. A bibliographic search was performed using B-on, PubMed and textbooks, based on the keyword “Disabled Patients”.
