- Assessment of nutrition knowledge among dental students: an online surveyPublication . Costa, Stephanie Frances Martins; Correia, Patrícia Nunes; Abreu, IsabelObjective: To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of students enrolled in the Integrated master’s degree in dental medicine at Universidade Fernando Pessoa (UFP) regarding the importance of nutrition in oral health, as well as to evaluate their level of confidence in providing nutritional counseling within clinical practice. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was conducted using an online questionnaire distributed to 4th and 5th year Dental Medicine students at UFP. The questionnaire comprised items related to knowledge, attitudes, practices, and self-perceived confidence in addressing nutritional topics with patients. The data collected was analysed using IBM SPSS® statistical software, applying descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to explore patterns and draw conclusions from the variables under study. Results: A total of 106 students participated in the study. Most respondents (90,6%) acknowledged the importance of nutrition in clinical dental practice and expressed interest in furthering their knowledge in this field. Nevertheless, a notable proportion (20,8%) reported insufficient confidence when providing nutritional counselling, particularly when evaluating dietary records. A large proportion of students (42,5%) stated they had not received formal training in nutrition throughout their academic education. Still, a large percentage (40,6%) indicated that they often discussed topics such as sugary drinks consumption with patients. The most frequently suggested training improvements included the creation of dedicated curricular units and availability of nutritional related material in the dental clinic. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate a widespread awareness among dental students regarding the relevance of nutrition to oral health. However, educational gaps persist, which may limit the ability to integrate nutritional knowledge in the clinical setting. Preparing future dentists requires an understanding of the patients’ diet habits to support a truly holistic and interdisciplinary approach to oral health care.
