- Knowledge of and attitudes towards erosive tooth wear among portuguese university students: instrument psychometric validationPublication . Almeida, Maria Beatriz Leite Lage Ribeiro de; Monteiro, Patrícia Manarte; Silva, IsabelBackground: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) is an increasingly prevalent condition with significant clinical challenges. Despite its importance, validated instruments to assess university students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding ETW remain scarce. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the questionnaire – ETWQ Portuguese version, designed to assess knowledge and attitudes regarding ETW among Portuguese-speaking university students. Methods: Data were collected from 127 participants of the University Fernando Pessoa (UFP), based on prior pilot survey responses (N=245) and a convenience sample of all UFP students (N=344). Participants completed the 25-item ETWQ, consisting of two domains: knowledge (15 items) and attitudes (10 items). Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach’s alpha and corrected item-total correlation (CITC). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with Varimax rotation was conducted to explore the questionnaire’s factor structure. Results: Three knowledge items were excluded due to low CITC or poor communalities, resulting in a final 22 item instrument (12 knowledge, 10 attitudes). The knowledge domain demonstrated good reliability (α = 0.802), and the attitudes domain showed excellent consistency (α = 0.847). EFA revealed four distinct factors within knowledge and two within attitudes, supporting the questionnaire’s conceptual model. Fit indices indicated acceptable model fit. Conclusion: The validated 22 item Portuguese ETWQ is a reliable and valid tool to assess university students’ knowledge and attitudes toward ETW. Its use in educational settings can help identify learning gaps and guide targeted teaching strategies. Further validation across diverse academic settings is recommended.
