- Looking at crime – ética e deontologia em contexto de investigação com pessoasPublication . Azevedo, Vanessa; Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.Atendendo a que os «criminólogos tendem a basear-se principalmente, direta ou indiretamente, em investigação empírica com seres humanos» (Johnstone, 2005, p.60), no âmbito do projeto “Looking at crime: Communities and physical spaces” tornou-se imperativo discutir e balizar um conjunto de princípios éticos e deontológicos. Neste trabalho propomos: i) proceder à contextualização sintética do projeto, ii) identificar as suas especificidades, e iii) sistematizar os princípios éticos e deontológicos considerados, exemplificando a sua implementação. O projeto “Looking at crime: Communities and physical spaces” propõe-se a realizar um retrato abrangente do crime no Centro Histórico do Porto, através da caracterização dos crimes reportados oficialmente, da implementação de um inquérito de vitimação e da observação dos espaços físicos, tendo como população-alvo indivíduos adultos da comunidade. No que concerne às especificidades - com evidentes implicações ético-deontológicas, destacam-se o envolvimento de uma equipa multidisciplinar, a multiplicidade e diversidade das fontes dos dados, a delimitação geográfica e a abordagem de um grupo potencialmente vulnerável, nomeadamente vítimas de crime (Peter & Friedland, 2017). Assim, para além da obtenção das autorizações por parte das várias instituições envolvidas (e.g., Junta de Freguesia, Ministério da Educação), tornou-se imperativo salvaguardar princípios éticos e deontológicos, tais como o consentimento informado, a participação voluntária, a confidencialidade e o anonimato, a relação entre riscos e benefícios (com primazia do critério de risco mínimo), a segurança, a intrusão e a responsabilidade social (Caridade, 2017; Israel & Hay, 2014; Johnstone, 2005; Rhineberger, 2006). Estes princípios concretizam-se em várias estratégias, que perpassam as diferentes fases da investigação.

Nunes, L.; Sani, Ana; Azevedo, VanessaWhen a crime occurs, even if not reported, it raises a great concern on a social level, whether because of the complexity of the phenomenon, the persistence over time, the consequences of it, or even because of the space where the crime has taken place. Official records do not take into consideration a certain amount of criminal events, mostly because of non-reported crimes, nor spaces characteristics, which results in a lack of understanding of the global phenomenon and its complexities. This project, involving a multidisciplinary team and focused on Historic Center of Porto, aims to: i) characterize criminal behaviour base on the type of crime, geographic location, and perpetrators; ii) get access to non-reported crimes; iii) identify the signs of crime, or risk of crime, in a school environment; and iv) map out the physical spaces that associate with criminal behaviour. A multisystemic approach will be applied including different contexts and different individuals – i.e., communities and their members, school staff, students and the physical places where the interaction happens. In order to look at crime in a holistic view, data from several sources – official statistical data, self-report surveys, and physical spaces observation - will be collected. In addition, we also aim to combine and integrate these data into a single database. Therefore, the project will provide a comprehensive and deep portrait of crime in Historic Center of Porto, suggesting new criminal preventive strategies that could be put into place. Detailed information about the scope, aims, methods, expected outcomes and research team will be presented in this poster.

- School personnel perception of parental involvement and students’ behavior problems: practical implicationsPublication . Parental involvement in school activities is crucial to promote social functioning. This study aimed to access the Portuguese school personnel perception of parental involvement and students’ behavior problems. A study with 333 school personnel, aged between 29 and 66 (M = 50.84, SD = 7.54), was developed. School personnel’s participants rated parental involvement as low and nearly one in five professionals rated student’s general behavior as bad. A significant association between parental involvement and the perception of students’ general behavior was found. 80% of the professionals rating student’s general behavior as bad also rating parental involvement as poor. Additional research into implications of parental involvement in school activities and school students’ behavior problems is necessary aiming assessment, prevention, and intervention strategies in this area.

As práticas redutoras/preventivas do crime aqui apresentadas, decorrentes dos resultados alcançados pelo projeto LookCrim, podem contribuir para melhorar não só o Centro Histórico do Porto, mas todas as áreas urbanas, na cidade do Porto e noutras, que, de alguma forma, possuam algumas similaridades. Uma obra de acesso livre e destinada a todos os profissionais e alunos da segurança e do urbanismo, da criminologia, da sociologia, da psicologia da justiça, da arquitetura, da engenharia civil, das forças policiais e dos poderes autárquicos, bem como aos técnicos de segurança social e outros que atuem num domínio das ciências humanas e sociais em que possam também lidar com as questões da criminalidade e da vitimação.
- Violence in urban community: local diagnosis of security and victimization.IPublication . Sani, Ana Isabel; Nunes, Laura M.; Caridade, Sónia; Azevedo, VanessaCommunity violence is one of the phenomena that most affects perceptions of security. Moreover, when it is associated with violent or criminal victimization (both direct and indirect), it can deeply impact a population’s level of security and fear of crime within a specific geographical context. Accordingly, to develop appropriate helpful responses to victims of violence and crime, it is particularly relevant to assess people’s perceptions, to be aware of their victimization experiences and to identify their needs. The Diagnosis of Local Security (DLS) is a community assessment measure that allows for not only the gathering of information about criminal occurrences in a specific geographical area but also the collection of data on experiences of victimization and feelings of (in)security. The DLS became an internationally well-known procedure that empirically supports the development of community interventions. In this regard, based on a study that we are conducting through the community project “LookCrim,” in this chapter, we propose to analyze the DLS’s potential to assess perceptions of (in)security with respect to the experience of victimization to discuss the challenges of and the responses to the phenomenon of community violence.
