Agenda 2000: uma oportunidade histórica – uma leitura centrada na ideia de progresso

Neste texto pretende-se abordar a ideia de progresso subjacente à ideia de Europa adoptada na construção da União Europeia. Para tal usar-se-á, em particular, documentação produzida em torno da Agenda 2000, pelo eco possível (deliberado?) em tal designação das referências milenaristas ao sentido da história. Complementarmente, far-se-á uma breve referência ao milenarismo do primeiro milénio, uma vez que a Cristandade, espaço político e mental em que ocorreu, é uma das alegadas raízes da Europa de hoje frequentemente evocada por teóricos e por construtores da União Europeia(2). The paper discusses the concept of progress that underlies the idea of Europe, as adopted within the construction of the European Union. For the purpose, documents produced by the EU for the “Agenda 2000” will be analysed, searching for topics based upon a view of history directly or indirectly associated with the idea of the millennium. An incursion in the meaning the first millennium had for the people of the Middle Ages will also be made, given that Christendom is still evoked today, by some of the builders of the European Union, as a historical root for the idea of Europe.
