Entidade fundadora da cidade de Guimarães, o conjunto do mosteiro e depois colegiada agora de Santa Maria da Oliveira, tem que ser lido, na sua larga história de dez séculos, através do papel urbano e da evolução do organismo cenobítico, de que a igreja actual, sendo a muitos títulos extraordinária, é fruto também.

Founding entity of the city of Guimarães, the monastery, then collegiate church, of Santa Maria da Oliveira, and it’s architectural remains, must be interpreted, all through its ten century long history, through its urban role and in the evolution of the coenobitic architectural organism in itself, of which the present day church, remarkable as it is on its own, is a product as well.
