Abstract(s)
Temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMD) are characterised by pain and/or dysfunction of musculoskeletal origin in the orofacial region and have a multifactorial aetiology. Thus, their treatment should be conservative, and laser acupuncture (LA) can be used. LA is based on the stimulation of traditional acupuncture points using low intensity laser. It is non-invasive and has no side effects. The aim of this narrative review was to analyse the potential of TL in the treatment of TMD, evaluating its effectiveness in different subtypes of TMD. In the studies analysed it was found that the use of TL leads, in general, to a reduction in pain and/or dysfunction in the different TMD subtypes, and can be used in the treatment of TMD. However, further studies with larger samples, of longitudinal type, randomized, using more universal TMD diagnostic criteria and LA application protocol should be conducted for its validation in the scientific community.
