Abstract(s)
The anterior region of the maxilla is considered by the patients as the most important in terms of aesthetics, so that changes in the gingival area may compromise the harmony and symmetry of the smile. Among these changes, it is worth noting the excessive gingival exposure. The term “gingival smile” is used when there is excessive gum exposure during the smile. There is, however, no consensus in terms of the literature regarding the amount of gingiva exposed during the smile to be considered gingival; values vary between 2 and 4mm. The gingival smile is caused by a combination of variables such as gingival, skeletal, muscle, dental changes, external labia, among others. Treatment depends on the etiology and clinical diagnosis. In this sense, through a bibliographic review, the author of this work had as per objective to approach the various techniques for the correction of gingival smile, namely, gingivectomy, orthodontic repositioning, botulinum toxin application and the resective bone surgery to elongate the clinical crown.
