Atualmente, existem vários métodos para a estimativa da idade, que podem ser utilizados quando um indivíduo se vê envolvido em assuntos legais e judiciais, e cuja idade é desconhecida.
Através desta técnica, especialmente ao diferenciar adultos de menores, o método de Demirjian para os terceiros molares pode ser um método muito útil, que permite estimar a idade mesmo para além dos 14 anos, com base na fase de maturação do terceiro molar.
O objetivo do presente trabalho é compreender melhor o método de Demirjian e a sua aplicação aos terceiros molares.
A pesquisa bibliográfica foi limitada às publicações entre o ano 1950 e a atualidade. Foram encontradas um total de 146 referências bibliográficas, após aplicação dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, foram utilizadas 36 referências bibliográficas para este trabalho.
O método de Demirjian utilizando os terceiros molares é um método muito utilizado, fiável, mas com limitações, nomeadamente na precisão. Contudo, não deve ser utilizado sozinho, mas em combinação com outros métodos de medicina forense para aumentar a precisão da estimativa.
Today, there are several methods for age estimation, which can be used when an individual is involved in legal and judicial matters, and whose age is unknown. For this purpose, especially when differentiating between adults and minors, the Demirjian method for third molars is an age estimation method that allows estimating the age even beyond 14 years, based on the maturation phase of the third molar. The aim of this paper is to better understand the Demirjian method for third molars. The bibliographical research was limited to publications between the year 1950 and the present day. A total of 146 bibliographic references were found, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 36 bibliographic references were used for this work. The Demirjian method for third molars is a widely used, reliable method with limitations in accuracy. However, it should not be used alone, but in combination with other forensic medicine methods to increase the accuracy of the estimation.
