Abstract(s)
Myofascial pain of masticatory muscles is a temporomandibular dysfunction with muscular origin. It is characterized by the presence of trigger points and myalgia, with pain beyond the region of palpation, which can be located inside the borders of the muscle or referred in another orofacial region. Botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin with neuroparalizing action used in the head and neck region in cases of temporomandibular dysfunctions, dystonias, hemifacial spasms, bruxism, sialorrhea, headaches, and also in cosmetic treatments. The aim of this narrative review was to evaluate the efficacy of the application of botulinum toxin in the treatment of orofacial myofascial pain. The literature available shows that botulinum toxin is a viable option for treatment of myofascial pain, although there is still the need for more studies, randomized, double blinded, controlled and with larger study groups, in order to validate the future effects of the therapy, as well as multiple applications.
