Introdução: A análise do sorriso é uma importante etapa durante o diagnóstico e planeamento de qualquer tratamento dentário com objetivos estéticos, na medida em que este é um componente dominante da estética facial. Como a estética é um fator cada vez mais presente na área da Medicina Dentária, existe a necessidade de proporcionar novas alternativas ao nível dos tratamentos ortodônticos. Desta forma, os sistemas de alinhadores são baseados numa tecnologia inovadora digital tridimensional, sendo, portanto, uma alternativa de tratamento em várias situações, nomeadamente em pacientes mais exigentes com a estética.
Objetivo: Analisar, através de uma revisão da literatura, quais as indicações, limitações, vantagens, desvantagens, contraindicações e cuidados com os alinhadores dentários.
Metodologia: Revisão narrativa da bibliografia, selecionada de acordo com as palavras-chave e objetivo do trabalho.
Discussão e Conclusão: O sistema Invisalign® demonstrou-se uma alternativa de tratamento confiável, sendo um substituto aos aparelhos convencionais principalmente em relação à estética e em casos de pacientes com alergia a metais. Os alinhadores, quando indicados, funcionam dentro do previsto sem maiores complicações. O paciente deve estar motivado para o uso dessa modalidade de tratamento, pois a cooperação é fundamental e imprescindível na utilização do aparelho ortodôntico.
Introduction: Smile analysis is an important step during the diagnosis and planning of any dental treatment with aesthetic goals, as it is a dominant component of facial aesthetics. As aesthetics is increasingly present in the field of dentistry, there is a need to provide new alternatives in orthodontic treatment. Thus, the aligner systems are based on an innovative three-dimensional digital technology, and are therefore an alternative treatment in many situations, namely more demanding patients with aesthetics. Objective: To analyze, through a literature review, which are the indications, limitations, advantages, disadvantages, contraindications and care with dental aligners. Methodology: Narrative review of the selected bibliography, according to the keywords and the objective of the work. Discussion and Conclusion: The Invisalign® system has proven to be a reliable orthodontic alternative and is a substitute for conventional braces especially in terms of aesthetics and in cases of metal allergy patients. Aligners, when correctly indicated, work as intended without major complications. The patient should be motivated to use this treatment modality, as cooperation is fundamental and essential in the use of the orthodontic appliance.
