Abstract(s)
The gingival smile, can affect up to 10,5% of the population, with a female predominance(2:1),between 20 and 30 years. It is a concern for the patient and the Dentist. The objective of this literature review is to identify the potential of botulinum toxin in the treatment of gingival smile. In this literature review the search engines were: Pubmed, Elsevier, Science direct and B-on.The temporay restraint was used from 2007 to 2017,including review articles and articles describing clincal cases. The application of botulinum toxin is a less invasive and quicker to perform procedure that presents as a safe and effective alternative when compared to the procedures most used in the treatment of gingival smile(orthognathic surgey, gingivectomy and lip replacement). It has precise indications: hyperactivity/ hypercontraction of the bucco-labial muscles involved in the smile and usually presents a duration of effect between 4-6 months. It is a therapeutic resource increasingly used in Dentistry.
