A síndrome da apneia-hipopneia obstrutiva do sono é uma doença crónica com consequências que podem ser ameaçadoras para a vida dos pacientes.
A cirurgia, a pressão positiva contínua na via aérea, a terapia miofuncional e a aplicação de aparelhos intraorais de avanço mandibular são medidas específicas de tratamento da síndrome da apneia-hipopneia obstrutiva do sono.
Esta revisão narrativa tem por objetivo descrever as alterações fisiopatológicas induzidas por esta síndrome e as formas de tratamento, com especial destaque para utilização de aparelhos intraorais de avanço mandibular. Serão expostas as indicações, contraindicações, benefícios e efeitos adversos. Também serão abordadas, ainda que sucintamente, as outras formas de tratamento anteriormente enunciadas.
A revisão foi efetuada com base em artigos publicados em revistas disponíveis em diversas bases de dados eletrónicas: PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline e B-On.
Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome is a chronic disease with consequences that can be life-threatening for patients. Surgery, positive pressure continues in the airway, myofuncional therapy and application of intraoral mandibular advancement devices are specific measures for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome. This narrative review aims to describe the pathophysiological changes induced by this syndrome and the forms of treatment, with special emphasis on the use of intraoral mandibular advancement devices. Indications, contraindications, benefits and adverse effects will be exposed. The other forms of treatment mentioned above will also be briefly discussed. This review was based on articles published in journals available in several electronic databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline and B-On.
