Abstract(s)
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. Even so, the free expression of belief is still a controversial topic and an impossibility for many people. The subject is pertinent, as it encompasses diverse and serious violations of human dignity and integrity, and it’s a recurring theme in religious journalism, although it does not always gain prominence in the so-called traditional press. The purpose of this postdoctoral research is to analyze the micromedia circuit of information production about religious persecution, in the context of the group that professes Christian faith, since entities linked to the theme estimate that there are 365 million persecuted Christians around the world, usually in places where they are a religious minority. The main objective of the study is to reflect on the media spaces of informative production about the subject, analyzing the dynamics of journalistic work and the characteristics of the news. The reflection focuses on ACN Foundation (Portugal office of Aid to the Church in Need - Catholic segment) and Open Doors (Brazilian branch of Open Doors International – interdenominational origin). Two methodological procedures are used for the articulation proposed. The first is the in-depth interview, through a semi-structured questionnaire, with the journalism representatives of the selected religious entities. The second step is the analysis of news stories which focus on Christian persecution on each organization's websites. The objective of this research is to understand the dynamics of news production of CAN Foundation and Open Doors, since they function as agents of social understanding on the subject, whose humanitarian aid actors also become mediators between the lived facts and the narrated experiences. They are characters, in the role of religious agents, witnesses or victims, who intentionally share suffering and healing through the stories that later become media texts. Their experiences are part of the belief they profess and usually instigate them to narrativize them as a way of living the faith in process. Finally, it is emphasized that the narratives constructed in the news spaces of such organizations help to produce meaning about concepts such as identity, otherness, religious memory and intolerance, as they become a field of re-signification and resistance of the voices of the diverse social, ethnic and Christian groups represented there. To understand these meanings is to argue that freedom of belief is directly related to respect for human individuality and peaceful coexistence in community, aspects that journalism cannot fail to reverberate.
