A cavidade oral é um habitat único que permite a colonização de uma grande variedade de espécies microbianas comensais, pois fornece nutrientes, bem como humidade e concentrações variáveis de oxigênio. Além disso, a boca oferece microrganismos com superfícies potenciais para a adesão e subsequente interação com várias células hospedeiras. A colonização da cavidade oral em indivíduos saudáveis baseia-se em interações bacterianas-hospedeiras e interbacterianas equilibradas. A existência contínua de placa bacteriana nos dentes e nas gengivas causam inflamação, levando à periodontite. Há evidências crescentes sugerindo uma associação de periodontite crónica com outros tipos de doenças inflamatórias sistémicas, tais como aterosclerose, endocardite infecciosa, diabetes, resultados adversos da gravidez, doenças respiratórias, câncer, artrite reumatóide dentre outras. Isso levanta a questão se a microbiota periodontal é a responsável pela etapa inicial das doenças crônicas. A presente revisão enfoca doenças periodontais, resultados adversos da gravidez, diabetes mellitus tipo 2, doenças cardiovasculares e artrite reumatóide.
The oral cavity is a unique habitat that allows for colonization of a wide variety of commensal microbial species, as it supplies a diversified nutrient influx as well as high humidity and variable oxygen concentrations. Furthermore, the mouth provides microorganisms with potential surfaces for adherence and subsequent interaction with various host cells. Colonization of the oral cavity in healthy individuals is based on balanced bacteria-host and interbacterial interactions. The continuous existence of dental plaques cause inflammation leading to periodontitis. There is also increasing evidence suggesting an association of chronic periodontitis with other types of systemic inflammatory diseases, such as atherosclerosis, infective endocarditis, diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory diseases, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and so on. This raises the question whether the periodontal microbiota is responsible for the initial step of chronic diseases. The present review focuses on periodontal disease, adverse pregnancy outcomes, diabetes mellitus tipe 2, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
