Abstract(s)
avulsão e a idade, havendo, no entanto, associação estatisticamente significativa dessa variável
uso (57,4%), no entanto, apenas 2 atletas afirmaram utilizar (3,7%).
Purpose: Evaluate, through a questionnaire: the prevalence of oral trauma in federated basketball athletes, in the 14 to 18 years old age groups; the knowledge of these athletes regarding the attitudes to be taken after the occurrence of an oral trauma; the prevalence of the use of mouthguards in the federated basketball athletes, in the same age group. Method: A cross-sectional observational study was carried out. Data regarding dental trauma and the use of mouthguards were collected, through a questionnaire placed at federated basketball athletes, aged between 14 and 18 years. The data obtained were analysed through IBM ® SPSS® v.26.0 Statistics. The comparison of groups or association between variables was performed through non-parametric tests. A significance level of 0.05 was considered (α=0.05). Results: The sample showed a prevalence of orofacial trauma of 59.3%. No relationship was found between the knowledge of attitudes to be taken after the occurrence of a fracture or avulsion and age; however, there was a statistically significant association of this variable with basketball practice time. We found a weak relationship between the knowledge of the attitudes to be taken and having suffered/observed the occurrence of a trauma. Most of the respondents showed that they know what a mouth protector was (96.2%) and though that was important to use it (57.4%), however, only 2 athletes stated to use it (3.7%). Conclusion: Orofacial trauma is a public health problem due to its significant prevalence, particularly in athletes. For that reason, it is urgent to sensitize athletes as soon as they start their sports activity to prevent these injuries.
