Abstract(s)
For the success of endodontic treatment, it is essential to associate efficient irrigation with mechanical instrumentation capable of eliminating bacteria within the root canals. From this perspective, the use of Sodium Hypochlorite has been recognized as the gold standard endodontic irrigant as it has a high capacity for dissolving necrotic tissue and organic matter, low surface tension and excellent bactericide at low cost. Although its use is considered safe, the toxicity of Sodium Hypochlorite should not be ignored. When in contact with living tissue it can cause serious complications. Therefore, it is crucial that dentists are aware of the associated risks and adopt preventive measures, including implementing an appropriate treatment plan. The objective of this literature review is to provide an approach to accidents involving Sodium Hypochlorite during endodontic treatment, exploring properties, complications, alternatives to its use, preventive measures and appropriate conduct in these situations.
