Abstract(s)
Chronic periodontitis is an infectious oral condition known for marked destruction of the supporting tissues of the teeth, which has an extensive list of risk factors. According to the literature, one of the known risk factor is diabetes mellitus (DM), which is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. The purpose of this narrative literature review is to review the existing evidence regarding the relationship between periodontitis and DM, exploring the characteristics of each pathology, at what level they conflict and how they influence each other, whether in the face of aggravation or in the face of their control. According to the literature, observed results revealed that there is, in fact, a close relationship between this two pathologies, and that influence each other. However, more complete studies are needed, with new variables, in order to fully understand the phenomena adjacent to this relationship.
