Abstract(s)
Sleep is common to all animal species, being one of the factors that allowed their survival throughout the centuries. Given the great impact of sleep in several domains, this has been a topic that has been increasingly the target of study in the scientific community. The main objectives that this study aims to achieve are: (i) to evaluate the prevalence of sleep problems from the perspective of parents who used the pediatric consultation and emergency department of a private hospital in the selected northern region; (ii) to determine the sleep disturbance index of the participants who used the pediatric consultation and emergency department of a private hospital in the selected northern region; (iii) to compare the sleep habits of the children of health professionals working in the selected hospital with the children of other professionals who used the pediatric consultation and emergency department of the same hospital. This study is part of the quantitative research paradigm and is a descriptive cross-sectional study. Data were collected in a private hospital in the northern region of Portugal from February 1 to April 31, 2022. The data collection instrument used was the Children ́s Sleep Habits Questionnaire, already translated and validated for the Portuguese culture. The convenience sample was composed of 34 parents of children aged between two and eight years old, being Nurses working at the institution or parents who used the Pediatric Consultation or the Emergency Department of the mentioned Hospital. The results show that there is a low prevalence of sleep problems identified by parents (24%), a Sleep Disordered Sleep Index of 50.03%, with a higher incidence in the two to three year old age group, the duration of the children's sleep time decreases with age, with an average of approximately 10 hours of sleep at night. We conclude that the sample under study presents a high prevalence of sleep disorders, results that are higher than others already published in Portugal.
