Introdução: Hoje em dia, muitos pacientes que necessitam de tratamento ortodôntico procuram também uma componente estética e, como tal, os alinhadores transparentes são parte integrante da solução para esta preocupação e são um fator chave na panóplia da ortodontia atual.
Objetivo: Esta dissertação tem como objetivo explicar em que consiste o tratamento recorrendo aos alinhadores, em quais situações é uma alternativa aos tratamentos fixos convencionais e quais são os limites dessa alternativa.
Materiais e Métodos: Realizou-se uma pesquisa bibliográfica recorrendo às bases de dados PubMed, Scielo, B-On, Medline, Science Direct e Google Académico, onde foram selecionados 54 artigos.
Conclusão: Os alinhadores são dispositivos relevantes nas opções de tratamento ortodôntico, uma vez que são uma alternativa estética, confortável e fácil de higienizar. No entanto, não são isentos de complicações e o sucesso da sua utilização está dependente da colaboração dos pacientes.
Introduction: Today, many patients in need of orthodontic treatment also require an aesthetic component and, as such, clear aligners are an integral part of the solution to this concern and are a key factor in the array of current orthodontics. Objective: This dissertation aims to explain what the treatment with aligners consists of, in which situations it is an alternative to conventional fixed treatments and what are the limits of this alternative. Materials and Methods: A literature search was carried out using PubMed, Scielo, B-On, Medline, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases, where 54 articles were selected. Conclusion: Aligners are relevant devices in orthodontic treatment options, since they are an aesthetic, comfortable and easy-to-clean alternative. However, they are not free of complications and the success of their use depends on patient cooperation.
