Abstract(s)
Amalgam has been used by dental professionals for more than a century because of its great physical properties, however there are several obstacles to overcome so that, in relevant cases, the advantages of amalgam restorations surpass their unaesthetic factor. A major limitation of non-bonded amalgam technique can be reduced making use of intermediate materials in amalgam restorations, decreasing microleakage and, consequently, the incidence of secondary caries. This thesis aims to review the scientific literature on amalgam restorations and the use of non-bonded and bonded techniques, describing, comparing and analyzing the advantages and limitations of both, as well as of the intermediary materials employed. For the elaboration of this thesis, research of articles was made through PubMed and B-on and preferentially recent scientific articles were selected, which was complemented with books about this topic.
