As doenças da tiroide, que incluem hipotiroidismo, hipertiroidismo, cancro da tiroide e tiroidite de Hashimoto, causam diversas alterações no organismo humano, nomeadamente na saúde oral. Este trabalho teve como objetivo principal refletir sobre estas patologias da glândula tiroide e suas consequências no estado da doença periodontal, xerostomia e saúde oral, deveras relevantes na área da odontologia. Como metodologia, realizou-se uma revisão bibliográfica nas principais bases de dados, relativa ao período de 2011 a 2021. Os resultados sugerem existir uma relação entre as doenças da tiroide, bem como alguns tratamentos realizados, e a ocorrência de alterações importantes na saúde oral dos pacientes, interferindo na qualidade de vida dos mesmos. Contudo, mais estudos são necessários para afirmar com exatidão tais indícios, o que justifica a relevância deste artigo.
Thyroid diseases, which include hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, cause several changes in the human body, particularly in oral health. The main objective of this work was to reflect on these pathologies of the thyroid gland and their consequences on the periodontal disease state, xerostomia and oral health, which are very relevant in the field of dentistry. As a methodology, a literature review was carried out in the main databases, for the period from 2011 to 2021. The results suggest that there is a relationship between thyroid diseases, as well as some treatments performed, and the occurrence of important changes in oral health of patients, interfering with their quality of life. However, more studies are needed to accurately state such evidence, which justifies the relevance of this article.
