Abstract(s)
a má qualidade bucal.
As improvements in quality of life and advances of modern medicine have led to longer life expectancy, primarily in developed countries, the increased aging of the global population has also resulted in a greater number of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s-type dementia. Because of the degenerative nature of Alzheimer’s-type dementia, these patients will require specialized care supervised by trained caregivers, but often these caregivers do not perform adequate oral hygiene, either because of patient mobility issues affecting locomotion, high caseloads affecting care, or ignorance affecting treatment priorities. In light of these problems, the presence of dental surgeons in the multidisciplinary team becomes a tool of extreme importance for the promotion of dignity as well as the prevention of innumerable systemic diseases related to poor oral health. This work, through a literature review, aims to establish the importance of oral treatment in patients with Alzheimer’s-type dementia, to identify the primary needs of these patients, and to enumerate the difficulties encountered by the dentist and the caregiver, as well as the best strategies to provide good oral hygiene. The presence of the specialist dentist in dental geriatric is a vital importance for the medical staff. The medical-dental treatment in mobile unit, besides being essential in the institutions, provides an adequate strategy for regular visits and with the possibility of performing preventive, curative and restorative treatments for patients with Alzheimer's disease.
