Abstract(s)
dente: osso, ligamento periodontal e gengiva.
Introduction: Periodontal disease, also called periodontitis, is characterized by a bacterial infection of the periodontium which is an infection in the supporting tissues of the tooth: bone, periodontal ligament and gum. Diabetes mellitus can be considered as a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia that occurs after a change in the production and release of pancreatic hormones leading to increased levels of glucose in the bloodstream. There is a bidirectional association between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus; according to the literature, diabetes has a huge influence on the onset and progression of periodontal disease (PD) in the oral cavity, while PD alters the glucose metabolism which will hinder the control of diabetes leading to uncontrolled blood glucose levels. Objective: To evaluate whether there is a positive association between periodontal disease and diabetes mellitus. Materials and Methods: A research was carried out using the bibliographic databases of PubMed, Lilacs and Scielo. This research followed the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results/conclusions: The analysis of the literature leads to the conclusion that there is a bidirectional relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease, the awareness of that connection being important to prevent and monitor possible complications. However, further studies are needed to confirm this relationship.
