Abstract(s)
Depression is a condition whose prevalence is expected to increase in the coming decades. Patients affected by depression seek to compensate this change through pathological parafunctional habits, such as bruxism. However, the association between taking antidepressants and the onset of secondary bruxism, or altering the existing signs and symptoms of parafunction, is not unanimous among researchers. This narrative review aims to clarify the phenomenon of bruxism and its etiology, showing its association with depression and also to define its relationship with taking antidepressants. A bibliographic search was performed in the PubMed/Medline, Cochrane and Elsevier databases. Bruxism remains a poorly studied pathology and, regarding the existence of a relationship between this parafunction and taking antidepressants, there is no agreement between authors. Future studies are needed to elucidate the effects and consequences of these drugs.
