Os distúrbios temporomandibulares caraterizam-se, de acordo com a Academia
Americana de Dor Orofacial, por um conjunto de problemas clínicos que afetam os
músculos da mastigação, a articulação temporomandibular e as estruturas associadas.
Existem várias formas de tratamento. Presentemente, tem sido descrita a aplicação da
toxina botulínica como terapia para os distúrbios da articulação temporomandibular,
tendo como propósito a amenização dos seus sintomas.
O objetivo primordial deste trabalho é avaliar a eficácia da utilização da toxina
botulínica como tratamento da disfunção temporomandibular.
Foi efetuada uma revisão bibliográfica tendo, como base científica, artigos publicados
em revistas disponíveis na base de dados eletrónica Pubmed.
According to the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, temporomandibular disorders are characterized by a set of clinical problems that affect masticatory muscles, the temporomandibular joint and associated structures. There are several forms of treatment. Currently, the application of botulinum toxin has been described as a therapy for disorders of the temporomandibular joint, with the purpose of alleviating its symptoms. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of using botulinum toxin as a treatment for temporomandibular disorder. A bibliographic review was carried out with the scientific basis of articles published in journals available in the Pubmed electronic database.
