Abstract(s)
In the present dissertation, a retrospective survey of the clinical characteristics of pigmented lesions of the oral mucosa was carried out. Pigmented lesions of the oral cavity may be dual to local, systemic, physiological or pathological factors. Melanin is an endogenous granular pigment that can exhibit coloration ranging from yellow to black. Changes or disorders related to melanin can be initiated with trauma, infection, habits (smoking, gums, food), use of medications and by some systemic factors such as Addison’s disease, Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and tumors. This literature review aims to discuss the main pigmented lesions of the oral cavity, giving special importance to their differential diagnosis, because this approach will directly imply the establishment of appropriate treatment for each patient.
