O tratamento ortodôntico visa melhorar a estética e a função através de uma oclusão satisfatória, mas o principal problema com o tratamento é a instabilidade dos resultados a longo prazo. Ocorrência que se deve a um fenómeno conhecido como recidiva, que é a tendência geral dos dentes para migrar de volta na direção da sua posição original após o movimento ortodôntico. A recidiva ocorre em 70% dos casos pós-tratamento, sendo por isso o recurso à contenção crucial para manter os dentes na sua nova posição até à completa reorganização do novo osso alveolar e estruturas periodontais. Os dispositivos de contenção dividem-se em dois grupos: fixos e removíveis, sendo o principal objetivo desta pesquisa uma revisão narrativa da literatura actual, a fim de conhecer os principais métodos de retenção disponíveis, bem como as vantagens e desvantagens que apresentam, as suas indicações e o seu grau de eficácia.

Recurrence occurs in 70% of post-treatment cases, and therefore the use of containment is crucial to keep the teeth in their new position until the complete reorganization of the new alveolar bone and periodontal structures. These types of containment devices are divided into two groups: fixed and remedial, and the main objective of this research is a narrative review of the current literature in order to know the main available retention methods, as well as the advantages and disadvantages they present, their indications and their degree of effectiveness.
