Introdução: A doença periodontal e o diabetes são duas doenças comuns com alta prevalência. Muitos médicos aceitaram a relação entre essas duas doenças. Alguns pesquisadores relataram que o tratamento periodontal pode melhorar o controle metabólico do diabetes. Os efeitos do tratamento periodontal não cirúrgico no controle metabólico em pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 foram examinados.
Objetivos: Avaliar a relação entre a diabetes e a doença periodontal, incidindo particularmente sobre o possível efeito da terapia periodontal no controlo glicémico de doentes diabéticos.
Conclusões: Após a análise da literatura pode-se concluir que a terapia periodontal tem, de facto, um efeito benéfico sobre o controlo glicémico em diabéticos tipo 2. Ficou ainda claro que a promoção de saúde oral em pacientes diabéticos é de extrema importância. No entanto, mais estudos são necessários.

Some researchers related to periodontal treatment can improve the metabolic control of diabetes. The effects of non-surgical periodontal treatment on metabolic control in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus were examined. Objectives: Evaluate the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease, focusing in particular on the possible effect of periodontal therapy on the glycemic control of diabetic patients. Conclusions: After analyzing the literature, it can be concluded that periodontal therapy does, in fact, have a beneficial effect on glycemic control in type 2 diabetics. It was also clear that the promotion of oral health in diabetic patients is extremely important. However, further stu-dies are needed.
