Hoje, mais do que nunca, é dada extrema importância à aparência facial e à estética bucal. O brilho e a brancura dos dentes, de idênticas proporções e em harmonia com as gengivas, os lábios e a própria face ressaltam o sorriso do indivíduo, enquanto dentes escurecidos, para além de pouco estéticos, podem afetar o comportamento social com implicações significativas nas áreas profissional e afetiva, podendo ainda ser causa da perda de autoestima.
A Medicina Dentária é uma ciência em constante evolução. À medida que as pesquisas e a própria experiência ampliam o conhecimento, vão sendo criadas modificações na terapêutica e nas técnicas a utilizar. Visando atingir o atual padrão de beleza da sociedade, estabelecido por dentes brancos, bem contornados e bem alinhados, vem sendo dado ênfase, em Medicina Dentária, ao branqueamento dos dentes, sendo um desafio para os Médicos Dentistas determinar a eficácia das várias técnicas disponíveis, preservando, acima de tudo, a segurança dos pacientes.
O presente estudo tem por objetivo realizar uma ampla revisão da literatura, utilizando os motores de busca PubMed, B-On, e Google Scholar, a respeito do branqueamento dentário a fim de analisar os respetivos mecanismos de ação, indicações, contraindicações, vantagens e desvantagens clínicas.
Today, more than ever, extreme importance is attached to facial appearance and to oral aesthetics requiring. White and bright teeth, with equal proportions and in harmony with the gums, the lips and the face itself highlight the individual's smile, while darkened and of little aesthetics teeth can affect the social behavior with significant implications in the professional and affective areas, and may still be responsible for the loss of self-esteem. Dental medicine is a constantly evolving science. As research and experience increase knowledge, changes in therapy and techniques are being created aiming to achieve the current society beauty standard established by well-contoured and well-aligned white teeth, teeth bleaching has been emphasized in dental medicine, and it is a challenge for dentists to determine the effectiveness of the various techniques available, preserving, above all, patients’ safety. The aim of the present study was to conduct an extensive review of the literature, using PubMed, B-On and Google Scholar, on tooth whitening as a way of analyzing their mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, clinical advantages and disadvantages.
