Abstract(s)
A genetic susceptibility test to periodontitis was developed and commercialized with the aim to detect disease at an earlier and more treatable stage, and to advance patient’s odontological wellness. That tests detect the specific presence of IL-1 gene variations, responsible to overproduce IL-1, leading to a chronic inflammatory disease such as periodontitis. The development of several studies, with aim to verify the efficacy of this type of tests and be validated in multiple ethnic populations don’t be conclusive about is clinical utility. The scientific findings have presented some controversies. It suggests that further scientific studies and more complete genetics’ assessment may be useful to create a diagnostic test and in identifying patients with individual susceptibility profile to the disease, for an effective and preventive periondontal therapy.
