Abstract(s)
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) are conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), chewing muscles, and surrounding structures, typically with multifactorial causes. Physical therapies are commonly used as initial treatment, including osteopathy, a complementary medicine practice employing musculoskeletal pressure for diagnostic and therapeutic intervention. The purpose of this narrative literature review was to assess the neurophysiological basis of osteopathy and analyze its effectiveness in relieving pain and mandibular movement limitations associated with TMD. Although osteopathy has been shown to be effective in relieving pain and increasing mandibular mobility in TMD, further randomized studies are needed to validate which TMD conditions would benefit most from this approach, as well as the most valid osteopathic intervention protocols based on the TMD being treated and its relationship with the cervical disorders.
