Abstract(s)
Lifestyle is a broad concept defined by a universe of habits and behaviours adopted to face everyday challenges. These are mutable and are subject to a continuous process of learning, reinterpretation and testing throughout the life of an individual. These are made of well-defined behavioural patterns with a direct impact on the health condition, life quality, wellbeing or mortality rate. Nursing professionals have to deal, on a daily basis, with a wide range of external factors with a substantial impact on personal, professional or even academic levels. As such, these factors constitute a window of opportunity that can trigger the development of risk behaviours. It is crucial that betterm resources are provided, in order to achieve a higher level of literacy regarding health and the impact of lifestyle choices. With that, respecting individual freedom, professionals can make informed decisions with the final objective of having healthy lifestyle choices. The scope of the survey is to characterize the nurse’s lifestyle options of a given private hospital located in the north of Portugal. It is a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive survey restricted to a convenience sample of 44 subjects. Data collection was executed using the “EVF” survey, tailored and validated for the Portuguese population according to the method described by Silva § Brito (2014). Results were computed with software resources based on descriptive statistic methods. The sample used for this survey was made of 44 nurses, in a ratio of 86,36%-13,64% for female-male gender distribution. The average age of the sample is 26,9 years old. Regarding our methodology, the results reveal that 15,9% of the nurses have an “Excellent” lifestyle, 70,5% have a “Great”, 9,1% “Good” and only 4,5% have a “Regular” one. To briefly summarize, it was found that we must increase the awareness and consensus in adopting healthy behaviours among these health professionals for the discussed domains, namely sleep quality, stress, family and friends and tobacco usage.
